Adventures in Mexico

Did a little picture story on our trip to Mexico.... care to follow along?!

------------------------------------------------------------------

The trip was everything we needed: relaxing, gorgeous and full of amazing new adventures. Activities included -  a lot of laying in the sun catching up on a few issues of New York Magazine, spent quality time with new friends, a little exploring of an abandoned building next door and the typical night out dancing to the best of Shakira with balloon animals, obviously.

You treated us well Mexico..... we hope to see you again soon. Till next time.......

What I Wore :: Beach Wedding + Week(end) Roll Call

Double whammy Friday - an outfit and a roll call post in one!

We recently attended a gorgeous beach wedding and I finally had an excuse to wear this fun and vibrant dress. I bought it right before it got a little chilly out and I'm still figuring out the winter version of this outfit... I will make it happen (suggestions welcome)!

Dress :: Urban Outfitters

Belt :: Forever 21

Jewelry: Hermes, F21, J.Crew, DIY stacked pearl necklace, thrifted jewel necklace

 ----------------------------------------------

Well, hello there November..... you snuck right on up on us, didn't you!

- My favorite shell got himself a book deal. If you're a fan of Marcel and in NYC, come down to the Apple store in Soho on Nov. 15th at 6:30pm to meet Jenny Slate and Dean Fleischer-Camp (cameo by Sloane Crosley).....  bonus, they are debuting a new video!

- The next Blog Brunch is tomorrow at 1pm EST. Excited to catch up with the whole blog brunch crew! We are discussing SEO.... if your first reaction is 'SEO what?'...  you should join us! You don't need to be a blogger to want to learn about SEO.

- My friend Michael is running the NYC Marathon this Sunday. He has been training with Fred's Team to not only run the marathon, but also fundraise to support vital cancer research projects at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. It's truly inspiring. The marathon is 26 miles and goes through all 5 boroughs - I know, crazy.... my legs hurts just thinking about it. If you are able to help, you can get more information on Michael's personal fundraising page.

- Ernest Alexander opened his pop-up shop last night on the lower east side. The space was so perfectly designed and the infamous jazz group, Duet, performed all our favorite hits. So proud of the whole Ernest team!

- SAVE THE DATE -- Charity:Ball 2011 has been announced.

- As you have read, I have a girl crush on Nicole Richie...... that includes her jewels and her clothing line. If you don't have the cash flow, like Nicole, to be able to actually purchase any of her designs, you can now rent them! Hooray! Rent The Runway just announced they have added all things House of Harlow.

Have a most delightful weekend!

Love & Reason

Block printing is near and dear to my heart. When deciding what our wedding invites would be, we were drawn to anything and everything block printed. And that's exactly what we ended up going with. I love the process of block printing and the art that goes into the creation. So, it was no surprise when I met fellow Brooklynite Kate Sutlive via Blog Brunch last month, and saw her shop, that I was immediately a huge fan of her work.

Love & Reason is a beautiful shop full of adorable note cards that will give you the perfect excuse to get back in the habit of sending notes via snail mail. Not only are they gorgeous designs, but I'm a very firm believer in handwritten notes. There is a magic and warmth in thoughtful, handwritten words where an impersonal and typed email falls short. And, who doesn't love the surprise of getting a note in the mailbox?! I will literally squeal and open that note like it's the first gift of Christmas!

It's hard to choose a favorite design. The feathers are a top contender, as well as, the black and white framed prints placed side-by-side.... such a modern decoration idea. Kate's prints are the perfect mix of simple design with the uniqueness that is block printing. Love & Reason was recently featured in Design Sponge (so exciting!) and Kate regularly updates her blog, so be sure to keep up with her. Also, holidays are around the corner, start stocking up on your thank you notes now!

What A View + Week(end) Roll Call

Wish that view is what I was looking at now instead of the weather.com forecast's prediction of snow tomorrow. Mexico was the perfect trip at the perfect time. Nothing says relaxation to me than laying by a pool, walking along the beach and having delicious meals in perfect weather. Now, how can we go back once a month?!

It sure was hard to get back into the swing of things post Mexico, but here's the scoop ::

- Sloane Crosley is one my favorite writers plus she's a New Yorker, if you need a good laugh, be sure to read her books 'I Was Told There'd Be Cake' and 'How Did You Get This Number'. She wrote an article for Bon Appetit on the American family Thanksgiving...... and it's spot on!

- I've been eyeing the leopard flat movement since, oh, August.... but I could never talk myself into the price tag of those pretty Sam Edelman ones or even the Steve Madden version. So imagine my excitement when I saw the BP version at Nordstrom for a fraction of the cost....victory!

- Came across an adorable, simple and classic blog / shop named 'Old Faithful'. Great products for guys and handmade home goods.

- Who knew the Ace Hotel has a blog?!

- 'Charity in Color' - a great way to make your jean purchase go the extra mile. J Brand Jeans have teamed up with City Year to help promote education. City Year is an education focused non-profit that is wholly focused on fighting the national dropout crisis. J Brand are committed to selling 1000 pairs of 'City Year' style jeans to aid in their efforts and raise awareness for the work City Year is doing.

- Fan of Adele? Yea, who isn't. Well, keep an eye on this young one (note the braces - she's all of 15 years old) as she becomes the next UK sensation. Birdy's video for 'People Help The People' is hauntingly good and mature for a girl her age.

- I know, can't believe I'm doing this.... but a group of us are going to see Paranomal Activity 3 tonight....... and then probably go directly to a bar for a stiff drink on ice to help get to sleep. That's been our ritual after seeing the last two. Healthy?.... dunno. Does it work?.... you betcha!

What is everyone going to be for Halloween? Me.... I've been a whoopee cushion the past few years, and it was the smartest decision ever. Share your costume selections!

Gather Round :: 01

Welcome to my first ‘Gather Round’ post. These posts are intended to invite you into our casual dinner parties where we gather a few friends, old and new, around our table for a meal. As you’ve probably read a few times already, nothing brings me more joy than setting a dinner table, hosting friends, enjoying wine and having great conversation. I have an affinity for the good ol’dinner table and all that it can encompass. There really is nothing better.

These posts are also to introduce you to some amazing people that we are lucky to call friends and who continually inspire us as they are live out their passions and dreams.

We had a few friends in town last Saturday, so we decided it was the perfect night to have our first group over. The menu – like the decor and overall approach- is always simple and aimed to focus more on the content of a communal gathering than the glitz. My motto is that no one leaves talking about your plate chargers and glassware, but they will leave with a sense of renewal from an intentional conversation and genuine hospitality.

Meet the inaugural Gather Round crew:

Shuffle :: By day she can be found rocking Broadway Dance Center; by night, she listens to anything with a harmonica probably while watching Footloose and eating something sweet.

Chris :: An art director/ designer at Melville House Publishing, he’s my go-to for all things books and recently became our Brooklyn neighbor!

Leighton :: Thrilled to have him in town from Atlanta where he’s the graphic designer for Six Step Records. The first time we met was when he walked in the door for dinner and we were happy to welcome him! Yea for friends-of-friends!

Jeff :: As a freelance designer, Jeff makes truly breathtaking work. From his tribute to Sunday Ibok to his amazing lettering and branding..... I'm continually looking to his work for new creative ideas.

Kelsey :: An editorial and fashion photographer residing in Dallas, she’s been a friend of ours for a number of years. Her most recent visit was to do another shoot for Pinhole Press..... how cool, right! We love that she gets to visit often!

Dana :: Standing in front of one of her own creations! She is a graphic designer and the talent behind the resurgence of chalk art .... she has taken the world by storm this year. We are super proud of her. Oh, and the wine bottle label below is one of her designs as well. Fancy, yea!

Jamie :: A designer at Switch Creative and the lead singer of The Beaten Sea… talk about following all your passions.

Ryan :: An illustrator who's blog, Line By Line, is extremely powerful and will ultimately humble you. His entry earlier this month titled 'Survivors' still moves me.

Me + E :: Hosts!

The meal was fresh and seasonal ::

Cranberry and walnut salad with vinaigrette dressing, baked turkey breast, broccoli casserole, fresh baguette, butternut squash ravioli, homemade chocolate confetti cupcakes (from Dana!) with a cheese and hummus plate as appetizers. Yum yum.

The night was filled with meeting a new friend, welcoming a few to the city for the week and reconnecting with ones we don't get to see as often. We caught up on life, work, family, trips and shared a lot of laughs. Something magical really does happen when you gather round a table for a meal.

Looking forward to sharing more of these dinners with you!
