As a new parent for first time or the fifth time, you never stop worrying about your baby at all hours of the day. You can ooze the calm and ease of a seasoned parent, but you still know the feeling of restlessness at night over whether or not your baby is safe and sound. I distinctly remember the first few weeks home with Parker where I would sleep with her bassinet right up next to my side of the bed and even though she was sleeping soundly, I was wide awake staring at her, watching to be sure her belly was rising and falling and I’d even stick my finger under her little nose to be sure she was breathing. Fear of every little thing that could happen to your baby is a scary place to be in, and as a new parent, you are kind of overcome with fear all the time.
I’ve said it before, but I am thankful for smart people who create smart products. Thank you! I’ve made it a point to highlight the ones that have truly made this baby phase go a bit smoother the second time around for us and this is another one of those products. A few weeks after Sidney Sloane was born, I was introduced to this new gadget called the Owlet Smart Sock, and honestly, at first I was a bit confused! A sock that does what? But holy moly, this thing isn’t just any old baby monitor device, it’s a way of overcoming and combating some of that early parental fear.
So how does this magical little sock work? The Owlet uses pulse oximetry, the same technology that a hospital uses to monitor oxygen levels and heart rate. But instead of using a finger or toe clip, the monitor is disguised in a little sock worn by an adorable sleeping baby. So it's not super invasive and it uses safe technology. The electronics send your baby’s information directly to your phone via their app. It's designed to alert you through your phone or via the base station if your baby stops breathing, or if their levels dip too low or too high. Hallelujah!
I can’t begin to describe how much better I am sleeping at this newborn stage knowing that this device is helping us keep her safe. You can bet I still get up and stare at her little belly raising as she breathes, but I’m not overcome with fear at all hours of the night. I will also say that this will be extra helpful to have when we travel, stay with friends or family and are sleeping in separate spaces. Living in a loft apartment, we are conditioned a bit to just be super close at all times. We don’t have multiple floors and rooms in our home (which we actually love, keeps us together!) and I always worry more when she’s tucked away sleeping in a room on the other end of a house. I know this little sock will be with us for all the upcoming holiday travel, that’s for sure!
You might be asking yourself… how many times does she kick that little sock off in the middle of the night? Cause you can bet I was thinking the same thing. So far…. she hasn’t managed to get it off and she’s a wiggle machine. The sock itself is super comfortable, easy to get on her chunky baby foot and can be worn even with footed pajamas on. The price is a bit on the higher side, and rightfully so, it’s a high tech, well made and thorough product. Throw it on your registry or let some friends all pitch in for it as a group baby shower gift! I think it’s worth every penny, especially during these first newborn months.
